Why are people unable to forgive?
To ask this question is the same as asking a sighted person “why are you unable to see?”
It’s the same as asking a person with normal hearing: “why are you unable to hear?”

These people have the ability to see and hear.
It’s just that they choose not to exercise their ability.

If there is un-forgiveness in our hearts, it’s not a matter of ability.
It’s a matter of desire.
We don’t forgive because we don’t want to forgive….pure and simple:
not because we can’t.

To say that we don’t have the ability to forgive
is nothing more than an excuse we tell ourselves to protect our fragile egos,
to protect our pride.
It is also a denial of the presence of God’s grace in our lives.
According to today’s gospel God wants us to forgive.
If there is un-forgiveness, it isn’t on God’s part.

Our willingness to forgive has nothing to do with the offender, per se.
It has to do with God.
We choose to forgive because God forgives.
We forgive in imitation of God
…not because the other person says they are sorry;
….not because the other person repents.
….not because the other person realizes the hurt they’ve caused.
….not because the other person works to make amends.
We forgive because we have been commanded to do so by Jesus Christ.

Prayer For Divine Mercy

My heart sings joyfully to you, O Lord.
Through your Son, Jesus Christ
you have revealed to the world
the mystery of your divine mercy.
You have shown in and through him
that you are rich in mercy,
and that you are ready to come to the aid
of those burdened by sin
with free and pardoning grace.

I am not innocent of sin, O Lord.
Trusting that you forgive,
with fervent expectation and holy desire
I bow down and implore your mercy.
Bestow upon me this spiritual remedy
for  my weak will and my wayward heart.
In the depth of my soul I know
it is only because of your mercy
that I can hope in the promise of eternal life.

Teach me your way of mercy.
Increase my awareness and understanding
of this sacred work and discipline.
Bless me with this divinely acquired attitude
that my life may become a mission of mercy,
kindly offering to others
what you have so generously given to me.

Open my eyes,
open my mind to your mercy in some new way
that will increase my faith
and move me beyond resistance and inactivity.

Your mercy, O Lord,
which is without limit and endures forever,
is the source of my salvation.
Continue to shepherd me
according to its power.  Amen!
