24th Week in Ordinary Time

Thu, 09/18/2014
Rev. Msgr. Donald Enzweiler

The sinners and tax collectors seek Jesus out…
to benefit from his wisdom and his mercy.
The religious leaders seek him out….
to criticize his bedside manner.
Like the spiritual physician that he is, Jesus examines these patients…
evaluates the state of their souls,
offers a diagnosis and indicates treatment:
the sinners and tax collectors need acceptance, challenge, and direction in life…
time in his presence will contribute to their well-being, will do them good.
The religious leaders need an attitude adjustment:
time in reflection and study on the topic of mercy
while limiting their intake of sacrifice
is their prescription.
The underlying reality with regards to our spiritual health
is being in a right relationship with God.
The sinners and tax collectors needed one thing to improve this relationship…
the religious leaders needed another thing to improve their relationship.
My relationship with God is not what it should be.
Your relationship with God is not what it should be.
We all need something to improve this relationship….
and what I need may not be what you need
and what you need may not be what I need.
To some degree, we all need our attitudes adjusted
and we all need to deepen our understanding of God’s mercy.
I believe one of the key indicators of spiritual immaturity and neediness,
a telling symptom of sinful spiritual condition is the presence of inner criticism.
If we are criticizing others…
even if it’s no more than having critical thoughts,
something’s not right in our relationship with God.
It can be caused by envy or jealousy, self-righteousness, inflated ego,
fear, woundedness, arrogance, pride…the list goes on.
We can live with this deficiency, dismiss it as a minor inconvenience.
However, we run the risk of infecting others….of passing it on.
Or we can seek out a diagnosis:  find out where this inner criticism is coming from…
and accept the cure prescribed by Jesus.
May the sinner in all of us,
hear and respond… the call of Christ.
