We are on the road to glory.
The path we walk as followers of Jesus is leading us to God’s eternal kingdom.
On this road no disciple escapes suffering.
On this road the elect must be patient, for vindication will be delayed.
God’s justice will prevail, it is certain, but it will not be immediate.

Just as Jesus’ suffering and death are vindicated through the Resurrection,
the disciples’ faithfulness will be vindicated through God’s bestowal of eternal life.
Therefore, disciples of Jesus must pray always, lest they lose heart,
start doubting God’s goodness, maybe conclude God has abandoned them,
are tempted to sway in their allegiance to Jesus
and start heading in another direction.

We are on the road to glory.
It’s a long road.
We are promised:  while on this road God will never abandon us.
God will always remain one with us.
God will always remain in communion with us.
The decisive question is:  will we abandon God?
Will we get tired of a life of faithfulness to Jesus
in the face of suffering and persecution and powerlessness and delayed justice?

Jesus admonishes and encourages us to pray:  ongoing fidelity to God requires prayer.
And the greatest source of prayer for the Christian is the Scriptures.
The Scriptures give us the language to express the deepest of human hopes and longings.

So, when praying for faithfulness we can turn to….

Psalm 51:10-12     10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me away from Your presence And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation And sustain me with a willing spirit.

Proverbs 11:19    19 He who is steadfast in righteousness will attain to life, and he who pursues evil will bring about his own death.

Isaiah 25:4   4 For You, O Lord, have been a defense for the helpless, A defense for the needy in his distress, A refuge from the storm, a shade from the heat.

Isaiah 26:1-4    1 ….this song will be sung in the land of Judah: "We have a strong city; the Lord sets up walls and ramparts for security. 2 "Open the gates, that the righteous nation may enter, The one that remains faithful. 3 "The steadfast of mind, O Lord, You will keep in perfect peace, Because he trusts in You. 4 " (We) Trust in (You) forever, (O Lord) For in (You) we have an everlasting Rock.

We are on the road to glory.  It is a long road.
Let us make constant prayer our companion for the journey.
