We all have a relationship with Jesus Christ.
We are here in this room, doing what he told his disciples to do:
eat this bread, drink this cup in memory of me.
We have a connection to Christ…but what type of connection is it?

A master-slave connection is founded on ownership….the master is free, the slave is not.
The master does what he wants….the slave does what he’s told.
The master does not reveal all he knows to the slave.  If anything, he withholds information.
The master controls…the slave acquiesces….at least in behavior.
On the outside the slave complies but on the inside the slave is defiant
and always looking for a way to regain control of his own destiny.
The slave dare not let the master see this, to see what is truly in his heart….
for fear of punishment or retaliation or even death.

Jesus tells his disciples:  I am not your master…you are not my slaves.
I do not own you.  I am free.  You are free.
If we are to be connected it must be according to mutual choice.
I withhold nothing from you.  Everything I know I have told you.
You have everything you need to make an informed choice about the matter.
I have no hidden agenda, I have no secrets, I have no intention of taking advantage of you.
I want to be connected to you and I hope you want to be connected to me.

But I am not your master…so don’t treat me like one….and don’t act like a slave.
I am your friend.
And our friendship must be grounded in love….nothing else is acceptable to me.
Friendship is based in responsibility:  I’ll take responsibility for my end…
you take responsibility for your end.
Friends are honest and truthful with each other.

Jesus goes on to add a unique dimension to this friendship:
“If you want to honor the relationship between you and me
….this loving friendship we have…
then establish the same connection with one another.
My friends will be friends with one another.”

And herein lies today’s message.
If I claim to be in a loving relationship with Christ
and you claim to be in a loving relationship with Christ
but we are not in a loving relationship with one another….something’s not right.
And as long as that “something” is not right we are slaves:
to stubbornness, bitterness, unforgiveness, fear, ignorance….we are slaves to sin.
The freedom of Christ is the freedom to be in loving relationships.
Until we are willing to do for one another what Christ did for us,
we have work to do.

May the Spirit of God continue to transform our hearts.
