If we have not done so already,
it is time for us to start paying more attention to our “travelling companion”.
In moments of desolation or fear or anguish,
we might be tempted to think we are alone in life.
No one journeys through life alone.
An angelic companion has been assigned by God to watch over us
and to pray to Him on our behalf.

In moments of prosperity, contentment, and/or success and accomplishment,
we might be tempted to believe we don’t need any help, any divine assistance.
We seem to be doing pretty well on our own.
We seem to have overcome life’s obstacles all by ourselves.
We might welcome the thought of an angel by our side
as long as this companion doesn’t speak up too often,
doesn’t interfere with our well laid plans,
remains quietly in the background, ready to be summoned in times of danger if needed,
but otherwise knows not to get in the way.
“I can fend for myself, thank you very much.”

I think for many of us, we accept that God has provided us with a Guardian Angel.
We might have needed this companion’s assistance when we were children,
when we were prone to be mischievous or careless or overconfident.
But now that we’ve grown into adults
this divine companion is treated like an imaginary invisible friend we’ve outgrown,
who is no longer needed to keep us company.
So we put our Guardian Angel in storage….a box in the attic of our memories.

Every once in a while we hear or see something that brings our Guardian Angel to mind,
and we befriend once again this God-given overseer,
but the reunion is short lived.
The adult world with its demands, its problems, its challenges is far too sophisticated
to tolerate someone bringing his/her conscience to bear on business decisions,
let alone someone taking time (wasting time) consulting with their spiritual companion.
Besides, anyone who believes God is running the show,
and/or believes God would have anything to say about a particular worldly matter,
anyone who believes this is labelled a religious fanatic who has lost touch with reality,
and who is imposing personal, private beliefs on non-religious concerns.

The primary role of a Guardian Angel is to assist us in and on the way of salvation.
Our greatest accomplishments as disciples of Jesus Christ are
1.) surrendering our will to God’s will, and 2.) remaining faithful to God’s commands.
Evil and sin are too much for us to handle alone, to avoid on our own, to overcome on our own.
We need all the spiritual help we can get.
Our Guardian angel is always watching over us, is always at our side.
Let us reclaim our God-given companion, not as a consultant we keep on retainer
but as the very guardian of our soul.

Today’s prayer:  “Angel of God, my guardian dear.  To whom His love commits me here.
Ever this day be at my side:  to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen”
