The human heart is the engine of our bodies.
As long as the heart keeps beating, we keep living.
This has prompted people to conclude that the heart is the center,
the core element of every person.

I disagree.  The heart may be the core of our physical existence
but we are more than our bodies.
Our faith assures us
that a person’s existence continues after the heart ceases to function.

I know I’m getting into metaphysics here
but the core element of our existence is our soul, not our heart.
And if we want to get to the bottom of things,
if we want to discover the true source of both our struggles and problems
as well as our happiness and joy,
if we want to get to that place inside ourselves
out of which emerges thoughts, feelings, and understandings of good and evil,
then we must enter the realm of the soul.
It is the soul that contains and carries life, not the heart.
This may seem like a matter of semantics, words,
but the words we use are important.

It is from the fullness of the soul that the mouth speaks.
If our souls are full of goodness, our words and thoughts reflect this.
If our souls are full of evil and malice, our words and thoughts reflect this.
The foundation of discipleship is good soul,
which I believe is more than just a good heart.
A good heart can have good intentions, but good intentions aren’t enough.
History and experience show us good intentions can contribute to the promotion of evil.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that the deepest part of us is our soul, not our heart.
According to Jesus’ teaching, the deepest part of us needs to be converted to God.
Our souls need to be converted.

I’m reminded of a trip I took above the Arctic Circle in Alaska.
Our tour guide walked us out onto the tundra.
The sun was shining. Tundra flowers were blooming.  Insects were buzzing around.
It was probably 65 degrees.
He took a shovel, dug down about 18 inches, but could dig no further
for the ground below was solid ice.

Conscience is a matter of the soul.  Truth and beauty are matters of the soul.
Moral goodness and questions about the meaning of our existence and the reality of God
emerge out of the soul.

“May your love, O Lord, reach into the depths of our being.  Feed our souls with the wisdom of your word and the goodness of the Eucharist.”  Amen!
