The Presentation of the Lord

Today is a feast of light….a feast connected with the mystery of the Incarnation.
Jesus, the light of the nations, has come into the world to dispel darkness.
Presented as a fragile child, only forty days old,
this small flame will increase to the size of the sun, lighting the path of our existence.

A small flame, say that from a single candle, can be snuffed out with relative ease
or it can just as easily trigger a massive forest fire.
It can destroy, it can purify, it can prepare for rebirth.

The presence of God is sometimes very fragile
as it struggles to find a place in the human heart.
It can be snuffed out by another through a misspoken word,
a careless act of selfishness, or through poor witness.
It can just as easily be fanned into a brighter, more substantial flame through an act of concern,
a well-placed word of encouragement.
Our celebration of Eucharist, our participation in this act of communion,
our worship….fans the flame.

It is not required by church law that Catholics attend Mass on a weekday.
Yet here you are, presenting yourself before the Lord.
You come to God’s house
and re-dedicate yourselves to His purpose.
You offer a sacrifice of time and prayer.
You set aside other pursuits and give your attention to God.

In a way I feel like Simeon.
I see the activity of God’s Spirit reflected in your presence.
I bless God for this reassurance.
I am at peace for I behold nothing less than salvation….
a light shining in the darkness….the glory of God among His people.

Be reminded, however, the faith that brings you here is a two edged sword.
It will bring you to the goodness of God
but it will also bring you tribulation.
For it reveals truth in the heart,
a truth many in our world despise to the point of violent opposition.

I thank God as I witness this unfolding of grace:
faith in Jesus Christ endures without yielding.
In this faith I find redemption….
in this faith I find hope for the redemption of our world.

When you go from this sacred place…return to your own.
Grow strong.  Be wise.
And may the favor of God be upon you.
