Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Rev. Msgr. Donald Enzweiler

The crown of righteousness.  The crown of rejoicing.  The crown of life.  The crown of glory.

These four crowns are mentioned in the New Testament.
Those who remain faithful in their service to God’s plan of salvation
are to receive such crowns when they enter heaven.

The temptation while we live on this earth,
is to work for, to seek, and to cherish receiving an earthly crown:
public notice and admiration, fame and fortune, popularity,
positions of power, prestige, and honor.
But these are all corruptible
and they often interfere with living as Jesus calls us to live
and prevent us from attaining happiness with God.
Even after obtaining earthly crowns….we don’t keep them for long.
They are temporary at best.
Like everything of this earth….they fade away.

The crown of righteousness, the crown of rejoicing, the crown of life, the crown of glory
are heavenly crowns.  They are incorruptible and eternal.
These are crowns worth striving for.  These are the crowns to seek, to cherish receiving.

It is fitting that Mary, the Mother of God, receive such a crown when she entered heaven.
Her faithfulness to God’s plan, her willingness to do God’s will,
her willingness to be the mother of Jesus Christ,
her willingness to offer her life to the fulfillment of God’s purpose instead of her own
made her worthy to receive such an honor and reward.

In and through Mary God’s plan was carried out.  She is our inspiration.
Her life reminds us:  it is possible for a human being to love God without limit
and in that love, cooperate with goodness and truth and grace
even if it means having to give up what everyone else is doing….
even if it means having to suffer for the sake of something much greater: the salvation of others.
Mary is not only our inspiration….she is our help.
Through her intercession, she helps us on our way to her Son….
She helps us to fulfill our mission as individuals and as a Church
to faithfully continue the work of Jesus her Son and to glorify God in all that we do.

As the Blessed Virgin Mary was crowned in heaven, let us also crown her in our own hearts….
give her a place of honor in our daily lives.
And just as her “yes” to God was a new beginning
may this day become for us a new beginning of faith.

Today’s prayer:  “O Lord, by Your will and through Your grace, the Blessed Virgin Mary fulfilled her mission, her vocation, her work as Mother of Your Son Jesus Christ.  May her intercession for Your people, as she prays for their salvation, find favor in Your hearing.  As we honor her this day, grant us a share in the Spirit that allowed her to merit the title of Queen of Heaven.  Amen!”
