The Holy Family of Jesus Mary and Joseph

Fri, 12/30/2016
Rev. Msgr. Donald Enzweiler

Jesus Christ begins his mission within the context of the family.
Divine salvation is first brought to his family, his home.
By his presence, his obedience, his deference, his cooperation…
by his contribution, his service, his kindness and concern,
by his humility, his attentiveness, his willingness, his prayer, his holiness…
by his very person he sanctifies his family.
His first purpose was to bring the love and goodness of the Father into his family life.
In and through this activity he verifies that family is a sanctuary of love and the cradle of life.
Today’s feast is celebrated in honor of Jesus, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and St. Joseph, as a family.
Their lives together provide for us the model for Christian family life.
Not that we know everything about their daily interactions
but they represent the closest thing we have to a divine pattern, design, example
to be emulated by all Christian families.
It is necessary to say, I believe, that their family life entails the reality of human family life.
In other words, their experience was holy and God-centered but it was not super-human.
It was not heaven on earth.  It was not all bliss and paradise.
It entailed hardship, danger, seeking refuge, work.
It entailed difficulty, struggle, sacrifice if the face of an unknown future.
It entailed suffering and death, grief and sorrow.
Today we are reminded of the importance and value of family life in God’s order of things.
The ways of the world seem to do more to dis-integrate family life than to promote its integration.
If we don’t consciously and deliberately devote time and energy to our family purpose and relationships,
if we don’t actively pursue the good, the holiness, the unity of husband and wife and children,
if we don’t commit ourselves to cultivating and building life-giving relationship,
virtue, truth, forgiveness, generosity, love and service
then division and distance and ill feelings and hard heartedness will win the day in our families.
Here are a few qualities to be fostered and celebrated within Christian family life.
These are presented in no particular order.
The Christian family is a community of believers, a community of faith in Jesus Christ.
The Christian family walks together on the journey of life.
This does not mean that everyone is in the same spiritual place
but it does mean that everyone has a common purpose and shared destination.
To strive together is to thrive together.
The family is bonded together by love, commitment, responsibility, blood.
These bonds are sustained by prayer, service, active concern, availability, sacrifice….
the sharing of joys and sorrows, successes and failures.
The purpose of family includes formation, growth, maturity, facing and overcoming obstacles,
discovery and transformation, providing safety and refuge, boundaries and rules, celebration of life, acceptance and love, roots and wings.  The work of family is always a work in progress.
Our prayer for today:  “O Lord, bless our families.  Protect our families.  Restore our confidence that family is, by Your divine plan, a foundational element of the good life and the Godly life.  Help us to invest our resources so as to help one another live according to Your will and Word.  Amen!”
