22nd Week in Ordinary Time

Tue, 09/05/2017
Rev. Msgr. Donald Enzweiler

Since the children are back in school, I thought we would have a test this morning.
How many virtues can you name?
Think about it for a moment.  Use your fingers to count if necessary.
Faith, hope and charity are primary and most essential Christian virtues.
I hope you thought of these.  But I hope you thought of more than these.
And I hope your ran out of fingers as you counted.
Mercy, respect, humility, justice.
Kindness, obedience, generosity, trust.
Tolerance, patience, modesty, forgiveness.
Courage, fortitude, faithfulness, honesty.
Compassion, courtesy, civility, friendliness.
Loyalty, reverence, peacefulness, consideration.
Detachment, self-discipline, service, flexibility.
Helpfulness, joyfulness, moderation, responsibility.
Tact, sensitivity, orderliness, caring.
Gentleness, honor, reliability, unity.
Acceptance, wisdom, authenticity, understanding.
Prudence, temperance, sincerity, cleanliness.
Commitment, perseverance, optimism, determination.
Encouragement, fairness, excellence, integrity.
Harmony, gratitude, graciousness, enthusiasm.
Knowledge, truth, sacrifice, goodness.
As you can see, there are many virtues.  And if we are wise, we will pursue these virtues,
adopt these virtues, understand these virtues, live according to these virtues.
If you haven’t noticed, there is evil in the world.  No one escapes the consequences of its power.
Evil is the source of human unhappiness.
It is destructive, ruinous, oppressive…
so much so that it is God’s plan, God’s will, God’s purpose to overcome evil…
to defeat evil, to free us from the imprisonment of evil.
I ask you about the virtues because
those who are ignorant of virtue are prone to evil.
If you do not deliberately clothe your soul is virtue, the devil will clothe it in evil.
The only way to rid your life of evil, to protect your life from evil,
is to purposely incorporate virtue into your life.
This is what Jesus teaches and commands us to do.
If you don’t know the virtues, how can you make them part of your life?
Human ignorance is the doorway
through which the devil finds a foothold in this world and in our lives.
And we can close that door, lock that door, by becoming knowledgeable of virtue.
Of course we must practice virtue once we know what it is.
To be ignorant of virtue is to be ignorant of the ways of Jesus Christ.
Knowledge of his truth will lead us to right thinking, right conduct, right living….
will lead us to true peace and happiness.
Today’s prayer:  “Deliver us from evil, O Lord.  Protect us from evil.  Bless us with a spirit that hungers and thirsts for love, truth and goodness….a spirit that never, ever, hungers or thirsts for anything that is evil.  Amen!”
