25th Week in Ordinary Time

Rev. Msgr. Donald Enzweiler

There is an appointed time for everything.
There is even a time for Jesus to correct his close disciples.
When Peter confesses "you are the Christ of God"
his understanding is limited to what he has seen up to this point.
For Peter "the Christ of God"
is one who has the power to save the needy people
from the forces of evil.
"The Christ of God" successfully withstood opposition
when he claimed authority to forgive sins
and changed Sabbath regulations.
To Peter and the other disciples Jesus was a champion
and they saw themselves as part of a glorious future.

Jesus corrects their perspective by introducing the reality of the cross.
Opposition to Jesus was going to get worse...much worse.
So much so his lot would be humiliation and death.

As yet the disciples could not understand.....
behind all this stands God's plan
and the vindication of Jesus in the resurrection.

There is much to learn for all of us about who Jesus is
and how he fulfilled God's plan of Salvation.
One thing is for certain,
the mystery of our redemption
cannot be separated from the mystery of the cross.

Any and every invitation to follow him
includes a journey to the cross.
There we are promised: new life comes through suffering and death.

I don't like to suffer and I don't like to die.
And yet I know I must.
There is a proper time for everything.
Maybe now is the time for all of us to die to some attitude,
some habit, some fear, some prideful aspect of our character.

Who is Jesus Christ?  God acting in our world.
He is the one who never abandons us in our trials
and lifts us up in our suffering and death.
He is the one who, with love beyond description,
died on the cross….. to free us from sin,
and to show us the way from death to life.
