Memorial of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Fri, 11/21/2014
Rev. Msgr. Donald Enzweiler

We have the freedom, we have the ability to come to God,
to approach our Creator in this sacred and holy place.
And just as Jesus reclaims the Temple for God,
just as he takes possession of it
and returns it to what it is meant to be, restores it to its divine purpose,
it is our hope and our prayer
that he will take possession of us,
temples of the Holy Spirit that we are,
and will redirect us to our divine purpose.
We are created to love God and God alone.
We are created to serve God and God alone.
Welling up from deep within us is a hunger and thirst for God,
an emptiness that only God can fill.
In our impatience, in our willfulness and inflated sense of personal power,
in our unwillingness to be spiritually uncomfortable, restless,
we try to fill this emptiness with what is of this world.
We become addicted to self-satisfaction.
We become possessed by what is not of God.
And we start resisting God’s attempt to reclaim us.
There is a truth about God:  He never ceases saying to us
“You are mine; come back to me.”
Our time of worship here in this Church
is a time for rededication.
In the face of the realities of sin and our human frailty,
with our whole heart,
we ask for a share of God’s Spirit.
We recommit ourselves, our hearts and our minds,
to inner attitudes and dispositions that are pleasing to God.
We submit to that spiritual power
whereby all other false gods are recognized
and then evicted from our lives.
We devote energy and time to behavior and conduct
which corresponds to the will of God and plainly distinguishes us from the world.
We seek to offer true worship to our God,
and to grow in our awareness and consciousness,
always believing God has something new about life to teach us,
always trusting in God’s promise of grace.
We sum up all these desires, all these needs, all these pursuits
with this prayer:
“Jesus, make your way to the center of my life.  Amen!”
