Advent Weekday

Date:
Tue, 12/23/2014
Author:
Rev. Msgr. Donald Enzweiler

In two days we will celebrate the Feast of the Nativity of Jesus Christ.
We spend the eight days before Christmas, the octave before Christmas,
reflecting on the titles given to the expected Messiah by the prophet Isaiah.
Seven titles for seven days with the eighth day being Christmas Eve.

Who is this child to be born, to be celebrated….to be honored and praised?
He is “Emmanuel”….that’s today’s title.
We see and believe….the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled when he says
"Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is with child
and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel." Is 7:14

Who is this messiah child we await?
He is “God who is with us.”
Light from Light, true God from true God.
The Incarnation streaming forth into this darkened world
as the Sun of Righteousness and the Light of Salvation.

He is the Morning Star
whose healing beams dispel noxious influences,
gladdening the hearts of men and women with the Good News
of the Father’s kindness and his love for all of creation.
By His grace and through His church
His truth and love shine forth
to all who are in the darkness of sin or error or ignorance
and overcomes the misery of suffering and death.

He is the Rising Sun in whom there is no darkness.
He penetrates the hidden recesses of our hearts
and enlightens those who believe with the light of faith.
He visits those imprisoned in hopelessness and despair,
defeats the Prince of Darkness, and pushes back the gloomy night.
He shines brightly at the hour of our darkness
rescues us from our fears,
and calls us forth into His marvelous light.

On this day, two days before Christmas
as we draw close to the day of the dawning of our Salvation
we join our voices with all those who wait for the promise of God to be fulfilled
and we proclaim:
“O Emmanuel, our king and our lawgiver,
the hope of the nations and their Savior:
Come and save us, and do not delay.”
