A disciple is a student, a learner,
one who is attentive and observant for the purpose of gaining wisdom and insight.
A disciple sits at the feet of the master seeking knowledge, seeking truth.
The disciple listens to and follows the instructions of the teacher.

The process of learning entails work.
Specific tasks are given to the student by the teacher to promote understanding and retention.
Today’s assignment?  Wash someone’s feet….and not just anyone who comes along.
Wash the feet of…
- someone who is below us.
- someone who looks up to us.
- someone who puts us up on a pedestal.
- someone who is impressed with our accomplishments.
- someone who believes they will never measure up to us
spiritually, or academically, or socially, or family wise.

An indication of understanding our Catholic religion entails at least two responses:
obedience to Christ;  doing what he says….
and emulation:  doing what he does, following his example.

What does Jesus do today?  He washes feet.
Service:  humble service, loving service,
and not the exercise of power and authority,
reflects a true understanding of the Christian faith.

What does Christ command today?  He says
“Welcome, receive, listen to the messengers I send to you.”
Who are these messengers?  And how will we know them?

According to the teachings of the Holy Father, the faithful messenger….
will act in the Lord’s name,
will be welcoming and merciful to the poor,
will be welcoming and merciful to all those in need of consolation and material assistance.
This person will make the world more human by personally doing good in the here and now,  will act in goodness and promote goodness for no ulterior motives….
not to manipulate, not to impress and gain the esteem of others,
but simply for the glory of God.

The faithful messenger will cooperate with others in proclaiming the Good News:
…will recognize and respect the dignity of those who hear the message;
…will draw others into the liturgical life of the Church;
…will draw others into the mission of the Church.

How will we know when we are in the presence of these messengers?
They will be the ones washing our feet.
